Jonathan Baker has always been enthralled by smart storytelling and larger-than-life figures, taking inspiration from greats like Ernest Hemingway to guide his own sensibilities as a director, writer, producer, entrepreneur, and adventurer.
He grew up in New York City on the same block as Jackie Kennedy and dreamt of working in the entertainment industry from the age of seven. While growing up in Manhattan in the 1960s, Baker became captivated by the movies, living vicariously through characters played by idols Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Steve McQueen.
Baker Entertainment Group was launched in 1985, a multimedia development and production company housed at Paramount Studios Lot. It is a new kind of production company that provides a unique form of entertainment known as “intertainment.” This is a 360-degree insight of the production process of filmmaking led by its fearless leader, Jonathan Baker.
His directorial debut, INCONCEIVABLE, was released by Lionsgate in June 2017, scripted by Chloe King, and was a $15 million “sexy dramatic thriller” set in Cincinnati Ohio. The psychological thriller stars Nicolas Cage, Gina Gershon and Faye Dunaway with Baker co staring as well.
In preparing for INCONCEIVABLE, Baker interviewed Hollywood’s most iconic directors, Jodie Foster, Adrian Lyne, John Badham and Taylor Hackford, as they share their wisdom about filmmaking perils and recount their experiences, this lead to his documents about his story in BECOMING ICONIC.
Studying film in his native New York City and at USC in his undergraduate years, Jonathan Baker began his entertainment industry career as a writer, director and producer of projects such as THROUGH SCAVULLO’S EYES, a Warner Bros. documentary on controversial fashion photographer Francesco Scavullo; DORF ON GOLF, a sports spoof with Tim Conway; and DIRTY TENNIS, a comedy starring Dick Van Patten, Nicolette Sheridan and Bruce Jenner that aired on HBO and Cinemax, winning the VSDA and the New York Film Festival Award for Best Comedy Video of the Year.
His graduation from college in California coincided with a writer’s guild strike. Therefore Baker created the European-inspired company, SkinSpa, a profitable start-up venture with celebrity clientele that led to the development of his beauty line, Jonathan Baker EST 1962. He grew the start-up venture, SkinSpa, into the leading full-service day spa in the U.S. before selling it in 2011. While focusing on Baker Entertainment Group and his evolving work as a film director, he remains active in the personal care field and recently introduced Jonathan Baker EST 1962’s first line of pure aromatherapy products.
Baker co-owner of The Maidstone Hotel in East Hampton boutique hotel is often frequented by celebrity guests and is an iconic property known within the Hamptons. The Jonathan Baker line can be found in all the rooms and sold in the lobby as well select dept store pop ups each summer.
Actor-director Warren Beatty and his wife, actress Annette Bening, sold their estate in the 90210 zip code to Baker. With a natural love for design, Baker has been remodeling the home but says it will always be his mentors home and has dedicated a special ‘Warren Beatty Theatre’ where a photo of Warren and Faye Dunaway (as Bonnie and Clyde) will greet guests as they enjoy the space.
A man with many talents, Jonathan Baker, is skilled at playing poker and has participated multiple times in the World Poker Tour, and Celebrity Poker Showdown, as well as NBC’s Poker After Dark.
Regardless of the challenge, Baker lives by the belief that “Life Is By Design.”
